With an estimated two million hospital acquired infections (HAI) in the U.S. annually, a resultant 100,000 deaths, and additional cost of care estimated as high as $30 billion, it is no surprise that reduction in HAI's is a high-priority target.  In a recent issue of Periop Insider, weekly newsletter of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), "4 Surgical Attire Sins to Ban in Your OR" are outlined by Lisa Spruce, RN and AORN Director of Evidence-Based Perioperative Practice.

Among the sins is laundering your scrubs at home.  AORN recommends that surgical scrubs be "laundered at a health-care accredited facility," and, as a way to further discourage home laundering, no longer provides guidelines for the practice.

Quoting the article,

"Home laundering cannot be conducted with the same rigid standards and processes as a health-care accredited laundering facility.  These processes include correct water temperature, detergent, drying, and transport.  Home laundering also presents a risk of transmitting bacteria from the practice setting to the health care worker's family and community."
